Designing a Backyard for Privacy and Comfort

How To / August 25,2013

Designing the perfect outdoor retreat in an inner city backyard requires some careful planning. Inner city backyards often have neighbours close by and minimal space available. Creating privacy from neighbours without ruining the look of a backyard is tricky, but not impossible. Demarcating backyard boundaries can provide a new avenue to enhance the look and feel of a space.

Pick something that fits in with existing home and outdoor design elements. Take into account the home's exterior paint colour and the colour scheme of the garden plants. Some backyards will look good with a latticework wall sporting dense vine coverage, while for a minimalist look you should try constructing a wooden frame with an opaque glass screen. After handling the privacy issue, the backyard furniture needs choosing.

Furniture is vital for entertaining guests, and comfort is key. On a tight budget, try plastic or artificial wicker, and place an outdoor cushion on each chair. If the budget allows, get a nice outdoor couch or a daybed for afternoon napping.
